The mayor of London announced proposals to extend the city’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in an effort to reduce air pollution, counter climate change and eliminate congestion.

Under the current scheme, drivers of (generally older) more polluting vehicles must pay £12.50 per day (in addition to the congestion charge) to drive within central zones. The proposed change would see the scheme extended to the whole of Greater London in 2023.

City Hall estimates that expanding ULEZ will remove up to 40,000 highly polluting cars from London’s roads and prevent 550,000 Londoners from developing diseases linked to air pollution over the next 30 years.
