When told about flood risk, homebuyers shun vulnerable homes

September 9, 2022

According to new research from the real estate brokerage company Redfin, homebuyers that are provided with flood risk information are less likely to make offers on properties in vulnerable locations.

The study involved giving a subset of some 17 million prospective homebuyers in the U.S. access to property flood risk information, including an assessment of the likely impacts of climate change.

Among participants who were interested in high-risk properties, those who were not given flood-risk information went on to bid on homes with an average flood-risk score of 8.5 (on a scale of ten), while those who had access to this information went on to bid on homes with an average flood-risk score of 3.9.

The results suggest that growing awareness of climate risks could significantly impact property prices in vulnerable areas.
