According to a new study from the Resolution Foundation think tank, around 9.8 million households in England and Wales will be unable to access the full benefits of electric vehicles because they lack access to off-street parking or a personal garage.
The study estimates that households that are able to charge their electric vehicles overnight (when electricity is cheaper) will incur annual running costs of just £139. The equivalent cost for households that are forced to rely on public networks is likely to be more than five times higher (£712).
This does however still compare favourably with petrol cars, which cost £1,100 on average to fuel each year.
